The way people search online is changing fundamentally. More and more consumers ask their questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews instead of scrolling through ten blue links. The question is not whether this affects your business, but when. And more importantly: are you ready for it?

Why the post-Google era begins now

Google hasn't disappeared, but its monopoly on search behavior is crumbling. AI engines generate direct answers and mention only a handful of sources. If your brand isn't mentioned? Then you simply don't exist in this new ecosystem.

This isn't future talk. Recent data shows that AI search engine usage is doubling quarter after quarter. For entrepreneurs like you, this means a direct shift: from SEO to Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

The checklist below helps you assess in less than 15 minutes how ready your business is for this transition.

Part 1: Your technical foundation

Without a solid technical foundation, no AI crawler can find or understand your content. Go through these points:

  • Schema markup implemented. Structured data translates your website into a language AI understands. Think of product, FAQ and organization schemas.
  • llms.txt present and correctly configured. This file tells AI crawlers which pages they may index. Without llms.txt you may miss crucial AI visibility.
  • robots.txt allows AI crawlers. Many websites inadvertently block crawlers from OpenAI or Anthropic. Check that your robots.txt doesn't exclude these bots.
  • Load speed under 3 seconds. Fast websites are crawled better and more often selected as a source by AI engines.
  • HTTPS active on all pages. Trust signals are essential for both Google and AI platforms.

Your score: Count the number of checked items. Less than 3? Your technical foundation needs immediate attention.

Part 2: Your content and citability

AI engines only cite your text if it is clear, structured and unambiguous. Content that works for people doesn't automatically work for AI.

  • Each page answers one clear question. AI selects sources based on relevance per query. Pages that are too broad fall by the wayside.
  • Key messages appear in the first two paragraphs. AI models weight the opening of your text more heavily than the rest.
  • Use of factual, quantifiable statements. "20+ years of experience" is citable. "We are a trusted partner" is not.
  • FAQ sections with direct answers. Short, factual answers increase the likelihood that AI will take your text verbatim.
  • Author information and source attribution visible. E-E-A-T signals (expertise, experience, authority, trustworthiness) also factor into AI answers.
  • Content is current and includes a publication date. Outdated content is systematically ranked lower by AI engines.

Your score: Checked fewer than 4 items? Your content is probably invisible to ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Part 3: Your competitive position in AI

AI answers are a zero-sum game. There is room for a maximum of three to five recommendations per query. Those not included lose the click.

  • You know which AI platforms mention your brand. Have you checked whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews recommend your business?
  • You know the AI visibility of your top 3 competitors. Without this benchmark you operate blind.
  • You monitor your GEO performance at least quarterly. One-time measurement is a snapshot. Trend tracking shows the movie.
  • You have an action plan based on data, not assumptions. Many companies still optimize on gut feeling. A GEO Readiness Score of 0-100 gives you an objective starting point.

Your score: Fewer than 2 items? You're giving your competitors a free pass in AI results.

Your total score and next step

Add up your checked items and see where you stand:

Score Status Recommendation
13-15 items AI-ready Focus on trend tracking and quarterly monitoring
9-12 items Basics in order Conduct an in-depth scan of weak spots
5-8 items Action required Start a GEO audit today
0-4 items Critical Your competitors are pulling ahead in AI results

The reality is that most SMBs score between 4 and 8. That's no shame, but it's a risk that grows bigger every day.
